Question by Chris: How do I make/Where can I buy a relatively cheap Kimono?
I’ve got to dress up as something for this fair called “Renaissance Fair”, or something like that ~ and I was put into a Japanese culture thing.

So,
I need to get a Kimono.
However, I have no idea how to make one, and I’m not that great at sewing lol.

Would it be better if I were to make my own? Or should I buy my own?

Also, please post any links on how to make one,
or any links where I could buy one for a cheap price? ($ 20 – $ 50 would be good, or a little more than that.)

**ALSO, I’m not looking for any fancy, expensive, show off ones, just a basic one :3.

Thanks.

Question by FBMagnolia: I’m writing a compare & contrast essay on Fairfax, VA and Fairburn, GA. Any ideas?
It’s for my Comp I class. I have only been to Fairfax once and I’ve never been to Fairburn.

There are quite a few similarities.

Fairburn is a part of Fulton County, Georgia, a classically southern area (read: confederate racist country) where its white leaders and constituents on its northern edges has for years tried to secede itself from the rest of the county to form its own pigment-impaired little Kingdom to be known as Milton County.

Fairfax VA, like Fairburn, traditionally used to be filled with these caucasian confederates. But instead of the familiar habit of attempting to secede from the Union, so to speak, their racist brethren have instead fled to neighboring counties to escape a massive influx of “coloreds”, “them foreigners” and homosexuals that have poured into the country from either nearby DC or overseas.

Question by Maria: Is using an operatic piece for a chorus audition a bad idea?
Hello there :) I have a audition for a very prestigious choir group at my school in about 2 months. I want to do O del mio dolce ardor, the aria. I’m skeptical to do this though. I have no operatic training. I understand the concept that they’re very emotional, use darker and all vowels and a lot of verbrato and I think I can do that… I just don’t want to screw it p. Should I do something else?
The group specializes in Renaissance music and madrigal music for the record.

It’s not so much that you are going to sing an operatic aria that might be a bad idea. It’s just a bad idea if you walk in and try to sing it as you THINK an opera singer would sing it. From your description, if you walked into an audition and sang an aria that way (darker and all vowels and a lot of “vibrato”) you would look and sound like an idiot.

Besides if they specialize in Renaissance music and madrigals, they may want a relatively light voice with very little vibrato at all. If you have a natural vibrato, don’t try to force yourself to sing completely “straight” because you’ll end up going off pitch and eventually causing strain to your vocal cords. Make sure you have your breathing and support solid so that your vibrato is completely controlled. Some choir directors want a kind of boy soprano/Gregorian monk sound even among their females, but really if you don’t have that kind of sound naturally, it’s best to find another choir where you might blend in better.

And that’s another thing. In choral music–it’s important that your voice blends with others. You can have a gorgeous voice–but if it sticks out of the group and you aren’t the soloist, you won’t be picked. Don’t be surprised if during your audition the choral director has you sing with a few other people (but on a different part) just to check the blend.

Madrigals and other music of the period is often acapella. That means the ability to stay on pitch throughout the song is critical. You should find out if the director wants you to pick a song that you can do acapella when you try out. It’s possible to sing an aria without accompaniment, but why make it harder on yourself?

Operatic training isn’t necessary to sing madrigals. The ability to sing on pitch and to sing a part standing among other singers who are all doing different parts–that’s critical. If you can read music it will be even more helpful (and you may be tested on this depending on whether this is high school or college we’re talking about).

Another factor is how many other singers with the same voice type as you will be auditioning for the group and how many openings they have for that section. If you are one of 50 sopranos trying out for 2 openings–not so good. However, if you can’t sing at all, they aren’t automatically giving you a place in the choir by default. They’ll keep looking.

Please understand that I am not trying to make fun of you or be harsh. I think you would be better off singing some traditional song like “Scarborough Fair” or “Greensleeves”. Sheet music comes in different keys and you pick the key that best suits your voice. However, I do have a feeling this is going to be an acapella
audition, and either of those songs (or something similar) would work very well.
Make sure you practice the song you choose over and over again so you know automatically what note to start on. You don’t want to switch keys in the middle of your song. Record your practice sessions and listen carefully for any “sour notes”. Don’t try to blame your microphone. Most people don’t like to hear their recorded voices, so do listen to the recording a few times just to get over the “shock” so you can listen objectively.

If you are interested in singing opera someday, or even classical music in general, it is best you take proper singing lessons. You can even ask the choir director who is bound to know the right teachers to recommend (and many teachers also teach private voice).

That’s a very pretty aria by the way. If you have the music–save it. Put it in your “someday” pile.

Audition songs for a Mezzo-Soprano?

by admin on May 14, 2014

Question by Mae: Audition songs for a Mezzo-Soprano?
I’m 15 years old and I am auditioning for a large show in my home town. I’m looking for an audition song, but I only have to sing 16 bars of it. Preferably a classical piece, because the show takes place in the late 1500’s. I don’t have too much training in singing (I do have some), however I have a lot of musical training. The audition is on January 21st, and I’d love to get some help on this! Also: it was just a preference for it to be a classical song because it only seemed fit, and I know directors like that. I was looking at some songs from Les Miserables that could possibly be candidates, too. Thanks!

The opera “Carmen” has the lead role set for a mezzo-soprano. “Habanera” is probably the easiest to sing from this opera:

If you don’t want to sing an operatic voice, I would suggest an old classic song “Simple Gifts”. It is easy to sing, easy to sing a cappella, and you can adjust it easily to sing in whichever key fits your own vocal range. There are enough long notes to develop the richness of your tone:

Concern by 卍 Heil Buddha 卍: Am I just a 16-year outdated brat (pretty long/rant considerably)?
My mother and I don’t have a quite very good connection. All of a unexpected, she has taken an desire in my existence, schooling-smart in any case.

We had been at Barnes and Noble and she asked me why I did not demonstrate her my report card. I informed her it was simply because she never ever questioned. Then she asks how she was intended to know report playing cards have been out. And I informed her she should have questioned. It seems pretty affordable to me.

And then she desires to play psychologist with me expressing shit like, “You didn’t display us your report card simply because you want to go the Renaissance Fair.” Um, no. She failed to inquire. If she cared so considerably she should have questioned. Granted, this is a female who never ever went to any school connected events, like when your little one will get that piece of paper that says they have graduated fifth grade, and so on.

So now, I have been in faculty for ten-eleven years, and NOW she wants to take an desire in my schooling/existence.

So to keep on topic, some of the issues she has explained these previous handful of days have genuinely produced me want to smack the shit out of her. But I never. I maintain my tongue and let her consider whatsoever the fuck she needs.

I virtually variety of snapped at her earlier nowadays. This was what occurred:
Me conversing to my grandmother: He still hasn’t questioned his mother.
Grandmother: Oh yeah.
Her: Questioned his mother what?
Gm: If he could occur above on Friday.
Her: I do not think that will be going on anytime before long.
Me: Why?
Her: Oh, she hears that, but not when I explained something the other day at this identical level.
Me: What did you say?
Her: Selective memory, I see.
Me (I got p.o’d so I yelled): I am NOT A FREAKING MINDREADER! (Then I stormed off even though mumbling, “She’s fucking bothersome.” She almost certainly listened to. I clearly did not treatment at the instant.)

Some of the things she suggests make me so freaking mad. Like, when we ended up in the auto collectively she explained, “Now, assure me you is not going to act like an evil bitch right after right now.”

WHAT Sort OF Mom Phone calls HER Possess DAUGHTER A BITCH? At minimum to her confront. Or how if I never do one thing she’ll say, “Oh. Are you on your period? Since you’re performing like a bitch.”

She thinks she is aware of everything. Then again, most mothers these days act like that.
The ***** in the last paragraph is “b*tch.”
I do not curse in entrance of her. Today was the 1st time.
