and go links, there are many images, but little explanation
The symbols typically have meaning for the person carrying the shield. A knight’s shield is the way you identify him when he is on the field of battle, so the symbols on his arms are ones he would identify with, either personally or through his family.
There is a whole language associated with heraldry descriptions, called blazoning.
